Finnpilot Pilotage Ltd is a special assignment company entirely owned by the State of Finland. The company has the exclusive statutory right to carry out pilotage activities.
For Wärtsilä Voyage the most important result in the ISTLAB project was the realization that remote pilotage is possible using the set of tools which is commercially available today. The question is, will the regulations allow remote pilotage to become a reality, enhancing the efficiency of ports and ships, as well as the safety of seafarers.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute was one of the parties involved in the ISTLAB project. Their involvement included researching surface waves and currents off the coast of Rauma, and developing oceanographic forecasting models for coastal areas which, in the future, will enable improved forecasts for the fairways.
The Finnish Geospatial Research Institute FGI, the research centre of the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS), made advances in satellite positioning in ISTLAB project. Research has been ongoing in this connection for a long time, but up to now it has not been possible to carry out tests in the context of intelligent shipping.
Maritime education has deep-rooted traditions in Rauma, having begun 140 years ago. Today, intelligent shipping is an important part of SAMK’s strategy. The history of maritime education in Rauma was celebrated 3rd November 2021 at the SAMK Intelligent Shipping Symposium.
“A seafarer’s duties have not changed greatly, but they have developed. It is not yet possible to guide a ship from port remotely, but digitalisation is already present in maritime, thanks for example to the advances made in navigation”, explains Master Mariner Janne Lahtinen.
Shipping is one of the most important facilitators in global logistics chains, the resilience of which is not immune to the different risks and their concretization. Technology, and the testing of technology, enable us however to prepare for these risks, and the ISTLAB occupies a central position both in development work and in testing.
